Modified Maxon OD808 Overdrive
Well...
this is simply a Tube Screamer stuffed into a smaller box. Although the name
is clearly intended to imply a close relation to the TS-808, its circuit is
actually closer to the TS-10. It's still a great overdrive, though, but with
the same shortcomings as its siblings. The output stage is TS10-spec rather
than 808, so it needs modifying, and the pedal still is a tad too thin in
the bottom end. The op-amp is of the "right" type (current production
JRC4558D), though, so it can stay. ![]()
The mod specs are the same as for the TS-9, and the OD-808 can be had in both Stage 1 and Stage 2 versions. Please note just like the TS-10, this pedal does not have room for the compression switch included in the Stage 2 mod. The mod cost is therefore reduced slightly, until I can figure out a way to fit the switch (if at all possible).
On top of that, I can modify the pedal to True Bypass, which makes the signal completely bypass the circuit when the pedal is off. It moves straight through the box, without touching anything but the jacks and switch. This does not alter the sound when the pedal is active, and this pedal is generally not considered to steal very much tone. But if you have more than a few pedals and want to avoid having extra electronic circuits in the signal chain, it can be a good idea to have it modified.
| Stage 1 mod | Yellow LED, more bass and TS-808 output stage |
| Stage 2 mod | All of the above, plus twice the gain with more overtones |
| True bypass mod | No coloration of the bypassed sound |
To minimize hiss and noise, only 1% tolerance metal film resistors are used in these mods.
Prices:
For True Bypass add 250 SEK / 27 EUR
Please note that the True Bypass mod described above applies to the entire Maxon "reissue" series, except the CS-505 (which has stereo outputs). If you have a Maxon CP101, D&S, D&SII, FL301, GE601 or PT999, it can be modified to true bypass for the same cost as the OD808.
Prices do not include shipping.
